In groups where this dynamic is particularly strong, it stunts their ability to affect the world beyond their own walls
The whole metamodern / integral / game b / etc meta-cluster fell into this trap HARD (and they kinda seem to love it in the trap) and that’s why after decades forming grand sweeping theories of reality and how to fix society, they… are still mostly stuck talking to each other and a handful of new recruits who also enjoy smugly decoding complex gobbledegook.
Within the group, whoever can throw the most cleverly prolix grandiloquence at an issue rises quickly
Outside of the group, it takes an increasing investment of time and effort and new vocabulary to figure out what the hell they’re saying
And if someone within the group tries to vibe translate it into a more simple and accessible version, there’s a whole “oh he’s oversimplifying, he doesn’t really understand, he’s dumbing it down” thing — so the incentives are bad for trying to spread the ideas in any real way
What’s really needed are more people willing to walk away from clout within the group, and do the thankless job of doing their best to vibe translate critical ideas to a wider audience, and to audiences where the given idea will make some difference
